FIFA Expands Prestianni Suspension to Global Level After UEFA Disciplinary Ruling

FIFA has confirmed the worldwide extension of the suspension handed to SL Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni, following disciplinary action initially taken by UEFA over alleged discriminatory behaviour during a UEFA Champions League match.

The decision ensures that the sanction, which originated in European competition, is now applicable across all football activities globally. This includes domestic league matches, continental tournaments, and international fixtures under FIFA and its member associations.

The disciplinary case emerged from a Champions League clash between Benfica and Real Madrid, during which Prestianni was accused of making inappropriate and discriminatory remarks toward Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior. The incident prompted immediate attention from match officials and was subsequently referred to UEFA’s disciplinary authorities for review.

After examining match reports and available evidence, UEFA concluded that the player’s conduct violated its regulations on discriminatory behaviour. The governing body imposed a six-match suspension limited to UEFA competitions, alongside a formal disciplinary ruling.

UEFA later escalated the matter to FIFA, requesting that the punishment be recognised and enforced at a global level. The request was based on the need for consistency in disciplinary standards across all football jurisdictions, particularly in cases involving conduct considered harmful to the integrity and inclusivity of the sport.

Following its review, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee approved the extension, making the suspension binding worldwide. As a result, Prestianni is now ineligible to participate in any official football activity during the suspension period, regardless of competition or country.

The ruling affects both club and international football. SL Benfica will be without the winger for domestic league fixtures and European matches, reducing attacking options for the team during a key phase of the season. His absence is expected to influence squad rotation and tactical planning as the club navigates multiple competitions.

On the international stage, the suspension also rules him out of potential selection for Argentina during the ban period. Depending on the timing of enforcement, the decision could extend to major fixtures and possibly affect his involvement in early stages of future international tournaments.

FIFA’s action reflects its ongoing policy of ensuring that disciplinary measures imposed by continental federations are recognised globally. In recent years, the governing body has strengthened cooperation with regional football authorities to ensure that sanctions are not limited by geography but are instead applied uniformly across the sport.

The organisation has consistently maintained a strict stance on discrimination-related offences, reinforcing that such behaviour carries consequences at every level of professional football. The global extension of Prestianni’s suspension aligns with this approach and highlights FIFA’s commitment to maintaining disciplinary consistency.

The case has also drawn wider attention within the football community due to the involvement of Vinícius Júnior, who has previously been at the centre of similar incidents in European football. His experiences have contributed to ongoing discussions about stronger protective measures for players and stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination rules.

For Benfica, the immediate impact will be felt in squad selection, as the club adjusts to the absence of a player considered part of its attacking rotation. The coaching staff is expected to rely on alternative options to fill the gap left by the suspension as the team continues its campaign across domestic and European competitions.

All member associations under FIFA are now required to enforce the suspension in accordance with the ruling, ensuring that Prestianni remains unavailable for selection until the completion of the disciplinary period.
