Finally: Rotimi Amaechi Resigns from APC, Slams INEC Over 2027 Plans

In a major political shift, former Minister of Transportation and ex-governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending months of speculation about his growing distance from the ruling party.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Amaechi made the announcement on Wednesday in Abuja during the unveiling of the interim executive of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has recently emerged as the political platform for a coalition of opposition parties preparing for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists at the event, Amaechi disclosed that he resigned from the APC the night before, adding that he was surprised the party had not already expelled him. He revealed that he had warned the party not to invite him to meetings anymore, signaling his long-standing dissatisfaction with its direction.
When asked whether his departure from the APC was simply about opposing the current government, Amaechi responded emphatically that it was about much more than regime change. He insisted that Nigeria needs a complete transformation, not just a replacement of political leadership.
“No, it’s not about changing the government,” he said. “If it were just about changing the government, then there would be no need to do so. It’s about changing Nigeria.”
Amaechi painted a grim picture of Nigeria’s current condition under the APC-led administration, citing extreme inflation, hunger, and widespread poverty. He lamented that citizens are unable to afford basic food, and that the economic crisis has left millions hopeless.
He further accused the APC of working in concert with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hijack the 2027 elections. According to him, the federal government is focused not on governance but on consolidating power by undermining democratic processes.
“The federal government is busy going around trying to hijack the election. INEC is helping them to hijack the election,” he alleged.
Amaechi said the country’s salvation cannot come from traditional party politics alone. He emphasized the need for a national movement that empowers ordinary Nigerians to take back control of their country.
“What must happen here is that we must start not just a party, but a movement,” he declared. “It must be a movement that brings Nigerians to, on their own, take over government, not us.”
Amaechi’s defection and remarks are seen as a boost to the ADC-led opposition coalition, which now counts several prominent figures including former Senate President David Mark among its ranks. The coalition is positioning itself as a national rescue mission, seeking to build a unified front to challenge the APC’s grip on power in 2027.
Political observers believe that Amaechi’s move could trigger a wave of defections and further polarize the political space ahead of the next general elections.
