Fiorentina offers update on Boye’s condition after on-field collapse

Edoardo Bove is conscious and responsive in hospital following his terrifying on-field collapse during Fiorentina’s clash with Inter.

What happened?
The 22-year-old midfielder, who is spending time in Florence on loan from Roma, went down unchallenged in the 16th minute of the Serie A fixture at Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday.

The game was stopped as players formed a wall around Bove and allowed him to receive medical attention.

The Bigger Picture
The Italy Under-21 international was rushed to hospital by ambulance, leaving several team-mates in tears as the decision was taken to suspend a sporting contest in the Italian top flight.

Fiorentina went on release a statement in which it was revealed that Bove was “currently under pharmacological sedation and hospitalised in intensive care”.

In a positive update on Bove’s condition, the club has confirmed the night went well and Bove has been taken off ventilation.

He has spoken to his family and been visited by his team-mates, with further tests scheduled to established what caused him to collapse.

What next?
According to Italian tabloid, La Repubblica, the Italian’s first words were “thank you all”, with well wishes and messages of support having flooded in from across the wider footballing community.

Diagnostic tests are ongoing, but it may be some time before Bove is playing again.

Edoardo Bove was born on May 16, 2002, in Rome, Italy.

He plays as a midfielder for Serie A club Fiorentina, on loan from Roma. Bove’s paternal family is originally from Naples, while his mother is German-Italian.

Bove started playing football in the Roman club of Boreale Donorione until 2012, when he joined Roma after a successful trial.

He made his professional debut for Roma on May 9, 2021, in a 5-0 Serie A win against Crotone. Bove has also played for Italy’s U16, U18, U20, and U21 national teams.

In the 2021-22 season, Bove was often called up by Roma’s coach José Mourinho.

He made his first Conference League match on December 9, 2021, as a starter in a 3-2 win against CSKA Sofia.

Bove scored his first senior goal on February 19, 2022, allowing Roma to draw 2-2 against Verona.

On August 30, 2024, he joined Fiorentina on a season-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent.

He scored his first goal for Fiorentina on October 27, 2024, against his parent club Roma in a 5-1 home victory.

However, on December 1, 2024, Bove collapsed during Fiorentina’s match against Inter Milan.

Bove is a mezzala or trequartista who is good at offensive insertions and tactically disciplined. He also has a good technique and an eye for the goal.

Off the pitch, he is studying economics and management part-time at Luiss University in Rome.
