Fire Service Blames Power Surge For Kwara Fire

Share this:

KWARA, NIGERIA –The Kwara State Fire Service has attributed a fire outbreak in the Pakata area of Ilorin to a sudden power surge, stating that swift response by firefighters prevented what could have escalated into a large-scale destruction of property and possible loss of lives.

Officials explained that the incident began after an unexpected electrical fluctuation reportedly triggered ignition within a structure in the densely populated community. They noted that the nature of the area, which contains closely packed residential and commercial buildings, increased the risk of rapid fire spread if not quickly controlled.

The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed that emergency responders were immediately deployed after distress calls were received from residents. According to the agency, firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes and began coordinated efforts to contain the flames before they could extend to nearby buildings.

Authorities in Kwara State said the quick intervention helped prevent what could have become a major urban fire disaster. Residents of the Pakata area described moments of panic as smoke and flames were seen rising from the affected structure, prompting many to rush out of their homes and call for emergency assistance.

Fire service officials stated that preliminary assessments pointed to a power surge as the most likely cause of the incident. They explained that unstable electricity supply remains a recurring challenge in many parts of the state and often contributes to fire outbreaks when electrical appliances or wiring systems are exposed to sudden voltage increases.

They further emphasized that the rapid containment of the fire was made possible through improved emergency coordination and timely community reporting. Officials credited residents for alerting the fire service early, which allowed responders to act before the situation worsened.

No fatalities were recorded in the incident, according to emergency officials, although property damage was confirmed at the scene. Authorities added that an assessment team has been deployed to determine the full extent of losses suffered by affected property owners and to document the incident for official records.

Fire service personnel used the opportunity to warn residents about the dangers of electrical instability and unsafe wiring practices. They advised households and business owners to install proper surge protection devices and ensure regular maintenance of electrical installations to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.

Officials also cautioned against overloading sockets and leaving electrical appliances unattended during periods of unstable power supply. They stressed that simple preventive measures could significantly reduce the frequency of fire outbreaks in both residential and commercial environments.

The fire service reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening emergency response capacity across Kwara State, noting that ongoing public awareness campaigns are aimed at educating residents on fire prevention and safety practices.

They assured the public that investigations into the incident would continue while urging communities to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire hazards immediately to emergency hotlines.
