Six goals in 41 minutes and the Nigeria’s U-17 girls, Flamingos, look all but through to the final competition of the 5th FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup taking place in Jordan later this year.

Four goals from Captain Rasheedat Ajibade and a brace from Yetunde Fajobi against South Africa at the National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday sent the 2014 quarter finalists soaring too high for the Bantwana, and rendered the return leg in Johannesburg in two weeks a mere formality.

Fajobi opened the floodgates as early as the third minute, hooking the ball and high and above Bantwana goalie Mologadi Maluleke and into the net from 20 yards.

In the 13th minute, Arit Atu’s swerving free –kick as stopped by the crossbar, but 13 minutes later, Rasheedat Ajibade opened her account after snatching the ball off a poor goal –kick by Maluleke.

Five minutes later, Ajibade scored Nigeria’s third after another defensive mix-up by the Bantwana, and two minutes later, Fajobi completed her brace after guiding into the net off a free –kick from the Nigerian half of the field.

As the Bantwana defence collapsed, Ajibade netted her third, and then made it six four minutes from recess by connecting brilliantly from Fajobi’s centre.

The second half produced no goal, though Ajibade could have made it seven with 15 minutes to go after rounding the goalkeeper, only to be foiled by the upright.

The second leg will come up at the Makhulong Stadium, Tembisa, outside Johannesburg in a fortnight.
