Flashback: How Hong Kong Billionaire Offered $65 Million to Any Man Who Could Marry His Lesbian Daughter

In September 2012, a Hong Kong billionaire made an extraordinary offer that attracted international attention. Cecil Chao, a property developer and shipping magnate, promised HK$500 million, approximately US$65 million at the time, to any man who could win the heart of his 33-year-old daughter, Gigi Chao, and marry her. What made the announcement particularly remarkable was that Gigi had already been in a long-term relationship with her female partner, Sean Eav.

The offer transformed a deeply personal family disagreement into an international talking point, raising questions about parental expectations, personal freedom and whether money could influence matters of the heart.

At the time, Gigi had reportedly been with Eav for approximately seven years. The couple had also held a commitment ceremony in France earlier in 2012, marking an important milestone in their relationship.

However, her father was unwilling to accept her choice of partner. Rather than keeping his disagreement private, he announced a financial reward that would make headlines around the world.

For many people who first encountered the story, the amount was almost unbelievable. HK$500 million was an extraordinary sum to offer for something as personal as marriage, particularly when the person at the centre of the arrangement had already chosen someone she loved.

Gigi initially thought her father might have been joking when she heard about the announcement. According to interviews she gave at the time, however, it soon became clear that he was serious.

The response was astonishing. Reports indicated that Gigi received approximately 1,500 marriage proposals and expressions of interest through social media. Men from different parts of the world reportedly contacted her, hoping to win her affection and potentially qualify for the enormous reward.

The attention did not remain online. Contemporary reports described prospective suitors appearing at her workplace, with some reportedly carrying chocolates and red roses. Others were said to have travelled from regions including Africa, the Middle East and Europe in the hope of gaining her attention.

What began as a father’s public declaration had become an international spectacle, attracting people who saw an extraordinary financial opportunity in a situation that was deeply personal to the woman involved.

Cecil, who was 76 at the time and had never married, defended his intentions by speaking positively about his daughter. He described Gigi as intelligent and beautiful and expressed his desire for her to find a suitable husband.

From his perspective, the offer was connected to his concern for her future. Yet his actions also revealed a fundamental disagreement between father and daughter over the kind of relationship that would make her happy.

For Gigi, the issue was not simply about the money or the sudden attention from prospective suitors. She was already in a committed relationship, and the public offer appeared to disregard the choice she had made for herself.

The controversy therefore raised a question that extended far beyond one wealthy Hong Kong family: how far should parents go in trying to influence the romantic decisions of their adult children?

Parents often want their children to be happy, secure and successful. However, those intentions can become a source of conflict when parental expectations leave little room for an adult child’s independence.

In Gigi’s case, the enormous financial reward could attract attention, but it could not determine whom she loved or compel her to marry someone else.

The story took another significant turn in January 2014, when Gigi publicly appealed to her father to accept her relationship with Eav. In an open letter, she acknowledged that he might struggle to understand her sexuality but asked him to treat her partner with respect and recognise the importance of their relationship.

Her appeal brought the emotional reality behind the headlines into sharper focus. The central issue was not whether a man could afford to pursue Gigi or whether her father could offer enough money to attract a suitable candidate. It was whether a father could accept a daughter whose personal choices differed from his expectations.

Reports in 2014 indicated that Cecil eventually withdrew the offer following his daughter’s public appeal.

Looking back, the episode remains a striking example of how wealth and influence cannot resolve every personal disagreement. Money can provide opportunities and security, but it cannot purchase genuine affection or guarantee that two people will build a meaningful relationship.

The story also highlights the difference between wanting the best for someone and deciding what is best for them without taking their wishes into account.

Cecil’s announcement made headlines because of its extraordinary financial value, but Gigi’s response revealed the more personal struggle beneath it. She wanted her father to recognise the relationship she had chosen rather than continue searching for a husband on her behalf.

Ultimately, the episode became more than a story about a billionaire’s unusual marriage offer. It became a reminder that love, acceptance and personal autonomy cannot be settled by the size of a bank account.

More than a decade after the original announcement, the story remains a memorable example of the tension that can arise when family expectations collide with an adult child’s right to choose whom they love.
