A tragic building collapse in the Abedi Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government, Kano State, claimed four lives and left seven others injured on Sunday evening.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the three-storey uncompleted structure came crashing down around 6:49 p.m. following hours of torrential rainfall in the area, raising fears about the safety of buildings under construction during Nigeria’s rainy season.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.

According to the agency’s Kano Territorial Coordinator, Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, the collapse occurred during a heavy downpour that weakened the foundation of the structure.

“Upon receiving the distress alert, we immediately mobilised our Search and Rescue (SAR) response team to the scene in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders,” Abdullahi said.

He explained that several individuals had taken shelter in the incomplete building before it collapsed.

Eyewitness accounts suggested that many victims were trapped under the rubble for hours.

“As of 1:56 a.m. on Monday, two persons had been confirmed dead, while six others were rescued with injuries,” Abdullahi stated.

However, further updates from NEMA later confirmed that the death toll had risen to four, with seven survivors now receiving treatment for various injuries.

The emergency operations, which lasted through the night into the early hours of Monday, have since been concluded.

Authorities say a structural integrity assessment will be carried out to determine the exact cause of the collapse and to prevent similar tragedies in nearby buildings.

The incident has reignited public concern about the unchecked proliferation of uncompleted and poorly constructed buildings, particularly in flood-prone zones during the rainy season.

Citizens have called on regulatory agencies to enforce stricter building codes and monitor construction activities more closely to avert further disasters.

As of press time, the identities of the deceased had not been released.
