Four senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), bolstering the APC’s majority in the Senate to 72 seats.

The defectors include: Senator Ekong Samson (Akwa Ibom South), Senator Etim Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East), Senator Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), and Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central).

The APC now holds 72 seats in the 10th Senate, up from 50 seats when the Assembly began in June 2023.

The PDP’s numbers have dropped to 26 seats, following a series of defections from its ranks and other parties like the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele welcomed the defectors, describing the event as a demonstration of democratic principles in action.

He emphasized the APC’s focus on national development, stating, “We have a serious job ahead to ensure that members and stakeholders remain committed to the ideals of our party”.

High-profile APC officials, including National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, Osun State APC Chairman Tajudeen Lawal, and former Minister Chris Ngige, witnessed the defections.
