French media giant finalizes acquisition of MultiChoice

French media giant Canal+ has secured full ownership of MultiChoice Group, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, in a $3 billion deal.
The South African Competition Tribunal approved the acquisition on July 23, 2025, allowing Canal+ to acquire the remaining 55% stake it didn’t previously own in MultiChoice.
The Tribunal imposed conditions to safeguard public interest and media independence, including commitments to preserving local content production and ensuring media sovereignty.
The deal expands Canal+’s presence in Africa’s media market, targeting 50-100 million subscribers.
MultiChoice brings 14.5 million subscribers and premium content brands like SuperSport.
The merger creates a multilingual media powerhouse, integrating Canal+’s French-language content with MultiChoice’s English and Portuguese offerings.
Canal+ has committed to spending approximately 26 billion rand over three years on initiatives aligned with South Africa’s public interest objectives, including local content production and sports broadcasting.
The deal is expected to inject fresh capital into MultiChoice, enabling investment in local content, technology upgrades, and digital innovation.
