Banjul, The Gambia – To strengthen electoral processes in West Africa, the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) recently conducted a Joint Post-Election Follow-Up and Needs Assessment Mission in The Gambia.
According to a press release on INEC Nigeria’s official X (Twitter) handle, the delegation visited the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of The Gambia on April 14, 2025.
Upon arrival, Vice Chairman Joseph Colley, alongside other Commissioners and management staff, warmly welcomed them.
This visit demonstrates ECONEC’s commitment to supporting electoral commissions across ECOWAS member states.
Leading the delegation was ECONEC President Mr. Konneh Mohammed Kwenewui, who stressed the importance of collaboration in improving electoral transparency.
Additionally, Nigeria’s INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, accompanied the team, reinforcing regional solidarity in election management.
During discussions, IEC Vice Chairman Joseph Colley thanked ECONEC for its consistent support.
He outlined challenges faced during recent elections and highlighted corrective measures taken by the commission.
Moreover, Colley emphasized the need for technical assistance and capacity-building programs to enhance future electoral processes.
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu commended The Gambia’s IEC for upholding democratic values.
He further assured them of INEC Nigeria’s willingness to assist peer institutions in the region.
The meeting facilitated an exchange of ideas on electoral reforms, voter education, and technology-driven solutions for smoother elections.
Following the discussions, ECONEC conducted a needs assessment to identify areas requiring additional support.
The visit concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening democratic governance.
