Gateway Games 2024: Team Delta overtakes Cross River on medals table

Team Delta, the defending champions of the National Sports Festival, have surged to the top of the medals table at the ongoing 22nd edition of the festival, tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024, overtaking early leaders Team Cross River.

 

Delta’s rise to the summit came after impressive performances in the weightlifting and kung fu events.

 

In the female kung fu Kaolu demonstration category, Confidence Onyema and Favour Mike secured two gold medals for the team.

 

heir triumph was complemented by Edirin Agha, who clinched gold and silver medals in the women’s weightlifting competition.

 

Earlier in the day, Team Cross River had taken a brief lead after King Kalu Ufiem won three gold medals in the 55kg male weightlifting event in Sagamu by lifting 94kg.

 

The Invited Junior Athletes (IJA), who impressed on the first day of the weightlifting competition with two gold medals, currently sit in third place with a tally of two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.

 

Team Lagos follows in fourth place with one gold and one bronze, while Team Bayelsa and Team Rivers are tied in fifth place with two silver and one bronze medal each.

Team Oyo holds the seventh position with one silver and one bronze, and Team Ekiti rounds out the medals table after claiming a single bronze medal on the second day of weightlifting.

 

In football, Team FCT began its gold medal campaign in style, overpowering Team Borno 4-1 in their group stage opener. Team Lagos secured a walkover victory after Team Ondo failed to show up for their match.

Meanwhile, Team Ebonyi edged out hosts Team Ogun 2-1, and Team Kano matched that scoreline with a win over Team Kwara. On the women’s side, Team Delta’s female football team kicked off their campaign with a convincing 3-0 win over Team Enugu.

 

The festival continues tomorrow with events in cycling, cricket, and more set to take center stage.
