The ongoing Gateway Games has been described as a powerful platform for identifying and nurturing future champions capable of representing Nigeria on the global stage.

Olumide Oyedeji, a member of the Elite Athletes Development and Podium Finish Board, stated this while addressing journalists on Friday at the Alake Sports Centre.

The former Nigerian basketball international emphasized that one of the board’s core objectives is to scout and groom talented athletes for major global events such as the Commonwealth Games, African Games, and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

“The Gateway Games is a formidable platform for talent discovery,” Oyedeji said.

Adding, he said, “We are witnessing athletes from across the federation compete in the spirit of unity and progress, which is exactly what we need to develop sports in Nigeria.”

He lauded the Games for fostering national integration and development, noting that the enthusiasm and sportsmanship displayed by participants transcend political and religious boundaries.

Oyedeji also praised the efforts of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC) and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for putting in place world-class facilities, saying their work laid the groundwork for a successful event.

“I hope future hosts will build on this momentum to take the Games to even greater heights,” he added.
