The Ogun State government has highlighted that the 2024 Gateway Games, Nigeria’s premier sports festival set to take place in Abeokuta, goes beyond athletics — it’s also a strategic platform to promote the state’s rich culture and tourism potential.

Senior Special Assistant to the Ogun State Governor on Public Communications, Mr. Dare Odufowokan, made this clear on Monday during a press briefing at the event’s media center. He stressed that hosting the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, which also marks Ogun’s second time as host, is an opportunity for the state to showcase its cultural heritage and warm hospitality.

Odufowokan explained that the festivities serve as a unifying event that fosters networking and social interaction among journalists and media professionals nationwide. “The festival isn’t merely about sports; it’s about celebrating our culture, promoting unity, and boosting tourism,” he said. “We urge media outlets to help project Ogun State positively by highlighting our values, friendliness, and vibrant cultural identity.”

In addition, Mr. Adekunle Solaja, Chair of the Media Sub-Committee, called on media practitioners to cooperate fully in publicizing the event, viewing it as a vital avenue for sports development and youth engagement across Nigeria.

As Ogun prepares to welcome athletes, officials, and visitors from across the country, the state is determined to leverage the Gateway Games not only to showcase athletic talent but also to reinforce its cultural allure and tourism prospects.
