Gavi Defends Leandro Paredes, Says Argentina Midfielder Should Not Face FIFA Suspension

Spain midfielder Gavi has called for calm following the controversial scenes that overshadowed the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, insisting that Argentina’s Leandro Paredes should not receive a suspension despite his involvement in the post match confrontation.

The Barcelona star made the appeal just days after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to lift their second FIFA World Cup title. While the football on the pitch captivated millions, the final whistle sparked an ugly confrontation that quickly became one of the tournament’s biggest talking points.

The tension erupted moments after the match concluded in New Jersey. As Spanish players celebrated their historic triumph, emotions boiled over among several Argentine players. Television footage showed Paredes confronting Spanish defender Eric Garcia before turning his attention to Gavi, pushing the midfielder to the ground during the chaotic scenes.

The confrontation triggered a brief melee involving players and members of both coaching staffs before officials and teammates intervened to restore order. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni was among those who stepped in to separate the players and prevent the situation from escalating further.

Despite being one of the players directly involved, Gavi has adopted a surprisingly conciliatory stance. Rather than calling for punishment, the Spanish international argued that incidents like these are driven by the intense emotions associated with competing in football’s biggest match.

Speaking after the celebrations, Gavi acknowledged that players often react differently in high pressure moments and stressed that the incident should not define those involved.

According to him, football is an emotional sport and players sometimes lose control in the heat of the moment. While he admitted that such behaviour should not become acceptable, he believes suspending Paredes would be an unnecessary response.

The 21 year old also noted that disciplinary action taken during matches, such as red cards, is usually enough to deal with aggressive behaviour, suggesting that lengthy post tournament suspensions may not always be the right solution.

Gavi’s comments have drawn widespread attention because many football observers had expected Spain’s players to demand severe sanctions against the Argentine midfielder.

Instead, his remarks have been interpreted as an attempt to reduce tensions between two teams that battled fiercely throughout an intensely competitive final.

The controversy has nevertheless attracted the attention of FIFA. Football’s world governing body has already confirmed that its disciplinary committee has opened an investigation into the incidents that occurred after the final whistle.

Officials are reviewing the referee’s report together with available video footage to determine whether any players or members of the coaching staff breached FIFA’s disciplinary regulations.

Reports suggest that Paredes is among several Argentine figures under investigation, while assistant coach Roberto Ayala has also come under scrutiny following allegations of misconduct during the confrontation. Other players could equally face disciplinary action depending on the findings of FIFA’s investigation.

The post match disorder contrasted sharply with what had been a tense but captivating World Cup final.

Spain eventually secured victory thanks to Ferran Torres, whose extra time goal settled a closely contested encounter after both teams had struggled to break the deadlock during normal time.

Argentina had earlier suffered another setback when midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a late red card, forcing the defending champions to finish the match with ten men before Spain finally found the decisive breakthrough.

Although the scenes after the final have dominated headlines, many within football have praised Gavi for choosing reconciliation instead of revenge.

His willingness to forgive an opponent involved in a heated confrontation has been viewed by many as a demonstration of sportsmanship despite the emotions surrounding one of the biggest matches of his career.

Football analysts believe his comments could also influence public opinion as FIFA weighs possible sanctions against those involved.

Whether the governing body ultimately decides to hand out suspensions or impose other disciplinary measures remains uncertain.

For now, FIFA has made it clear that its investigation is ongoing, with any final decisions expected after officials complete a thorough review of all available evidence.

As Spain continue celebrating their World Cup success, Gavi’s remarks have added a note of perspective to a story that threatened to overshadow an unforgettable triumph.

Rather than prolonging the hostility between two football giants, the young midfielder has chosen to promote respect and understanding, reminding supporters that while emotions can run high in elite sport, reconciliation is just as important as competition.

His appeal may not determine FIFA’s final verdict, but it has reinforced the values of sportsmanship that many believe should remain at the heart of the beautiful game.
