On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the Nigerian Army Headquarters buzzed with activity as Lieutenant General OO Oluyede addressed the press regarding Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2025.

The event took place at the Army Headquarters Conference Room and marked a series of upcoming activities leading to the grand finale scheduled for July 6.

During his speech, General Oluyede welcomed the press and highlighted the significance of the annual celebration.

He explained that it commemorates the Nigerian Army’s founding and honors its ongoing commitment to Nigeria’s sovereignty and security.

This year’s milestone celebrates 162 years of service, emphasizing its historical importance and continued role in national development.

A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice

Tracing its origins to 1863, Lieutenant Glover of the Royal Navy organized 18 Northern Nigerian indigenes into a local force called the “Glover Hausas.”

Over time, the Nigerian Army has evolved into a formidable institution, demonstrating resilience and significant growth in capabilities.

General Oluyede emphasized key moments, such as participation in World Wars I and II, the end of the Nigerian Civil War, and peacekeeping missions across West Africa and beyond.

Recently, Nigeria has encountered enemies of peace and chaos agents, with terrorism breaching borders and internal security issues escalating.

Despite these threats, the Nigerian Army actively responds to prevent terrorists from disrupting our socio-cultural heritage and national stability.

Additionally, the Army protects Nigeria’s sovereignty with unwavering dedication, showcasing resilience and strategic strength amid ongoing challenges.

He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to securing Nigerians and safeguarding democracy, highlighting NADCEL as a platform to showcase achievements.

The Theme for 2025: “Developing the Soldier First Concept”

This year’s celebration is centered around the theme “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive.”

According to General Oluyede, this theme reflects the Army’s renewed focus on prioritizing the welfare, training, and development of its soldiers.

The Nigerian Army, as an instrument of national unity, integration, and development, has made significant strides in innovation, research and development, civil-military relations, and technological advancement to better equip the soldier to carry out his constitutional responsibilities,” he explained.

Activities Leading Up to NADCEL 2025 Grand Finale

The COAS outlined a robust lineup of activities planned for NADCEL 2025.

These include religious services such as Jumat prayers and interdenominational church services, symbolizing the Army’s acknowledgment of its motto: “Victory is from God Alone.”

On Friday, July 4, several activities will occur across Kaduna State, including the commissioning of civil-military cooperation projects.

Additionally, a golf tournament will be held, fostering friendly competition. Meanwhile, free medical outreach programs will provide health services to local communities.

Furthermore, the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association will organize a charity outreach to support those in need.

Lastly, there will be public speaking engagements at various secondary schools within multiple Army formations, encouraging youth participation.

On Saturday, July 5, a lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna will focus on addressing topical issues relevant to national security.

Concurrently, an award ceremony for the 2nd COAS Annual Literary Competition will recognize outstanding contributors to literature.

Moreover, awards of commendation will honor deserving personnel for their dedication and service.

This concluding event emphasizes unity and national pride, bringing the series of celebrations to an inspiring close.

Strengthening Partnerships with Stakeholders

In his closing remarks, General Oluyede expressed gratitude for the longstanding partnership between the Nigerian Army and the press.

This collaboration has notably strengthened military operations over recent years, leading to more effective national security efforts.

He further reaffirmed our commitment to fostering strong, cordial relationships with media professionals, security stakeholders, and all well-meaning Nigerians.

Maintaining these bonds is vital for national progress and collective safety.

As NADCEL 2025 nears its climax, Nigerians are reminded of the sacrifices made by officers and soldiers—both past and present.

Their dedication has protected Nigeria’s sovereignty and inspired hopes for a stronger, more resilient Nigerian Army.
