Ghana’s Cabinet has approved plans for the country to formally apply to join the BRICS economic and geopolitical bloc.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
Ablakwa said Ghana had already sought India’s support for its application, describing the move as an effort to diversify the country’s economic and diplomatic partnerships.
“The Cabinet of President John Dramani Mahama has decided that Ghana should put in a formal application to join BRICS,” Ablakwa said.
He said joining the bloc would give Ghana more economic options and strengthen its cooperation with countries in the Global South.
BRICS was founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China before expanding to include South Africa and other countries.
Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia joined the bloc from 2024, while Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are also members.
Jaishankar said India supported Ghana’s interest in joining BRICS but noted that the application would still have to be considered by the wider grouping.
