Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation address in parliament took a dramatic turn when his aide-de-camp, Colonel Isaac Amponsah, suddenly collapsed.

The incident occurred shortly after the President began his speech, which outlined the government’s achievements.

A video obtained by Diaspora Digital Media, indicates that Colonel Amponsah, a longstanding member of the President’s security team, showed signs of discomfort before falling to the ground.

Fortunately, he was quickly attended to by Parliament’s medical team, who provided immediate first aid before transporting him to the Parliament House Clinic for further evaluation.

The incident briefly interrupted President Akufo-Addo’s address, but he resumed his presentation after a few minutes, visibly concerned about his aide-de-camp’s well-being.

The aide-de-camp of the Vice President, a police officer, took over to stand behind the President.

The cause of Colonel Amponsah’s collapse has not been ascertained, and his health update is eagerly awaited.

President Akufo-Addo’s address was significant, marking the final State of the Nation address of his tenure.

About Amponsah

Colonel Amponsah was born on November 12, 1970, in Kumasi, Ghana.

He hails from a military background and was raised with strong values of discipline and service.

He received his secondary education at the prestigious Prempeh College in Kumasi.

He later enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and Sociology.

Colonel Amponsah’s military career spans over two decades, during which he has held various command and staff appointments.

He has served as an instructor at the Military Training Academy, Director Operational Intelligence at the Department of Defence Intelligence, and Command Operations Officer at the Southern Command, Ghana Army.

Amponsah has also participated in several international peacekeeping missions, including the United Nations Mission in Liberia, the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire, and the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

*Current Role and Honours

Currently, Colonel Amponsah serves as the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to President Nana Akufo-Addo.

In this role, he is responsible for providing personal security and administrative support to the President.

Amponsah has received several honors and awards for his distinguished service, including the United Nations Medal for his participation in peacekeeping missions.

He is also a recipient of the Ghana Armed Forces Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

End of an era for Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo will officially hand over power to John Dramani Mahama, the president-elect of Ghana, marking the beginning of a new era in Ghanaian politics.

Mahama, a veteran politician, previously served as President of Ghana from 2012 to 2017.

During his first term, he implemented various initiatives aimed at promoting economic growth, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the overall quality of life for Ghanaians.

Mahama’s return to the presidency is historic, as he becomes the first president in Ghanaian history to be democratically elected to a non-consecutive second term.

The handover ceremony, scheduled to take place on January 7, 2025.

The event is expected to be attended by dignitaries from across the country and the continent, and will be watched by millions of Ghanaians and international observers.
