(DDM) — Godswill Akpabio on Saturday declared that his ascent from obscurity to the highest legislative seat in Nigeria is a manifestation of divine favour.
Akpabio delivered the remarks during the blessing and official opening of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He described himself as “the most‑ranked Christian in government,” saying God had “specially and graciously transformed and prepared me for the task ahead.”
Akpabio told congregants and attendees that his journey, from being “nobody” to becoming Senate President and thus the country’s third‑highest citizen, stands as proof that faith and divine grace can elevate anyone, irrespective of background.
He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their faith and to serve God sincerely, regardless of their present station in life.
The Senate President also used the occasion to emphasise the spiritual value of contributing to church projects, saying even the smallest offering, as little as 10 kobo, when put to use, carries divine acceptance.
Akpabio further announced plans to establish a worship centre within the National Assembly complex in Abuja, inviting Nigerians from all walks of life to participate in its commissioning in the coming weeks.
The event was attended by top clerics and political leaders, among them the bishop of Uyo, who commended Akpabio and his wife for their support of the church and encouraged him to ignore critics, saying that his elevated status almost inevitably attracts detractors.
Observers say Akpabio’s testimony comes at a time when discussions about leadership stability in the Senate have resurfaced due to circulating rumours of attempted leadership changes.
For many, his story resonates as a classic rise‑from‑humble‑beginnings narrative: a man whose faith, perseverance, and divine grace transformed him from “nobody” into one of Nigeria’s most powerful public office holders, a narrative that could inspire others to believe that no station is permanent, and with faith and commitment, anyone might rise.
