Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved the release of ₦1.194 billion for a comprehensive upgrade of the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, with a directive that all works be completed within eight weeks.

According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, the funds will cover the replacement of key navigational aids, upgrade of airfield lighting, payment of electricity bills, and service charges to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

Umanah stated the Governor’s decision followed a formal request from airport management, who highlighted the urgent need to improve the airport’s lighting and navigational systems. Once completed, the upgrades are expected to boost the airport’s operational capacity, particularly by allowing safe take-offs and landings after dark.

Governor Eno warned that any failure to meet the stipulated eight-week deadline would attract sanctions, urging strict compliance with quality standards. He emphasized that the intervention aligns with his administration’s ARISE Agenda and broader vision to make Akwa Ibom a key hub for tourism and investment through world-class aviation infrastructure.

The Governor also expressed confidence in the pace of other projects at the airport, including the new terminal building, access road and car park, VIP shade cover, aircraft apron, taxiway, advanced surveillance systems, the Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facility, and the Aviation Village. He urged contractors to double their efforts to meet delivery timelines.

To reinforce the directive, the Commissioner for Finance and Coordinating Commissioner for the Ministry of Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, Mr. Emem Bob, led an inspection tour of all ongoing airport projects. He was accompanied by Information Commissioner Umanah and the airport’s Managing Director, Mr. Uwem Ekanem.
