(DDM) – Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has announced that full civil construction work on the proposed Zariagi International Airport will begin in 2026.
The governor made the disclosure during the 2025 AKK Business Development Roadshow and the strategic launch of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline held at the Government House in Lokoja.
DDM gathered that the governor’s announcement signals a significant shift in the state’s aviation development agenda, coming after months of planning and consultations.
He stated that the airport’s design phase lasted eight months and has now reached the stage where relevant stakeholders are conducting final assessments.
Governor Ododo explained that the project is expected to boost aviation access, economic activity, and industrial competitiveness across Kogi State.
He noted that his administration is open to partnering with domestic and international investors willing to support the airport’s development and long-term operations.
According to him, several investors have already indicated interest in participating in the project.
The governor emphasized that Kogi’s strategic location as a major transportation corridor between northern and southern Nigeria gives the state a natural advantage in aviation logistics.
He stressed that his government remains committed to continuity, accountability, and responsible governance in all developmental initiatives.
Governor Ododo reiterated that no project initiated by his administration or inherited from previous administrations will be abandoned.
He added that the goal is to ensure steady progression of all infrastructural developments without disruptions.
The decision to convert the old Zariagi Airstrip into an international-standard airport dates back to 2024 when the proposal was first submitted to the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
The plan received preliminary approval, paving the way for the current design, evaluation, and investment mobilisation stages.
Stakeholders say the airport will not only enhance air transport within Kogi but also stimulate trade, tourism, and gas corridor development given its proximity to the newly launched AKK pipeline infrastructure.
Aviation analysts also note that the project aligns with Nigeria’s broader plan to expand regional air connectivity and support industrial growth along strategic economic corridors.
Residents and business groups in Kogi have expressed optimism that the airport, once completed, will open new opportunities for commerce, employment, and international partnerships.
The state government says it will continue to engage communities and stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation throughout the construction period.
Governor Ododo assured that full details on timelines, contractors, and funding arrangements will be made public as the project moves into the execution phase in 2026.
