The Abia State government on Tuesday awarded N1 million each to 150 top HND graduates of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba (OOPA) from 2022 to 2024.
The cheques were handed over by OOPA Rector, Christopher Okoro, on behalf of Governor Alex Otti.
He said the empowerment initiative is aimed at turning graduates into entrepreneurs.
“This gesture fulfils the governor’s promise to the institution two years ago,” Mr. Okoro said.
Qualification involved HND graduates submitting proposals. These proposals were vetted by a consultant who shortlisted successful beneficiaries.
Okoro stressed that the fund is a grant, not a loan. “The goal is to ensure beneficiaries invest it wisely, grow their businesses, and give back to society,” he said.
Governor Otti also instructed OOPA management to connect beneficiaries with key entrepreneurs. This support aims to help them utilize the money efficiently.
Mr. Okoro added that graduates who are currently serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) should collect their cheques when they return to ensure the funds are used for the intended purpose.
The rector also announced that OOPA will hold its 22nd convocation ceremony on December 5.
He highlighted improvements under Governor Otti’s administration, including academics, infrastructure, personnel welfare, and productivity.
OOPA has secured accreditation for its original 33 courses and launched 17 new ones, including Legal Studies and Igbo Language, to meet student needs.
Students are now producing iron doors for all primary and secondary schools in Abia and supplying refuse buckets across the state. This initiative has increased student engagement while generating revenue for the government.
OOPA is set to move to its new campus at Umuarakpa, Osisioma LGA, on January 6, 2026. However, the School of Engineering and Skills Acquisition Centre will remain at the current site due to ongoing business operations with local citizens.
Mr. Okoro thanked Governor Otti for his support and the media for highlighting challenges and helping the institution improve.
