Grey’s Anatomy Star Eric Dane Dies at 53 After Courageous Battle With ALS

Hollywood is mourning the loss of Eric Dane, the beloved actor best known for his iconic roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria. Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon at the age of 53, less than a year after publicly revealing his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS.

His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, describing his passing as the end of a “courageous battle” with the degenerative disease. They shared that he was surrounded by loved ones in his final moments.

Dane rose to global fame in 2006 when he joined Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, a role that quickly made him a fan favorite. His charm, confidence, and emotional depth brought complexity to the character, cementing his place as one of the show’s most memorable stars. Years later, he captivated a new generation of viewers as Cal Jacobs, the intense and troubled patriarch in HBO’s hit drama Euphoria.

Over the course of his career, Dane appeared in several notable television series and films. He had roles in Charmed and The Last Ship, as well as movies including Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque. His performances consistently showcased his range, from romantic leads to morally complex characters.

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane made his television debut on The Wonder Years in 1993. His career steadily grew over the decades, earning him recognition not only for his on-screen talent but also for his dedication to his craft.

In 2025, Dane revealed he had been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive condition that affects nerve cells responsible for muscle movement. In an emotional interview on Good Morning America, he spoke candidly about the anger and fear he felt, particularly as a father. Having lost his own father at a young age, Dane expressed heartbreak at the thought of leaving his daughters too soon.

Despite his diagnosis, Dane used his platform to raise awareness about ALS, advocating for research and support for those living with motor neurone diseases. His openness brought renewed attention to the condition and inspired many facing similar battles.

He is survived by his wife, actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia. His family described his children as “the center of his world,” adding that he adored his fans and remained grateful for the overwhelming support he received throughout his illness.
