Juventus have completed the signing of Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham Hotspur on a season long loan, giving the Serie A giants an experienced option between the posts as they prepare for the new campaign.
The agreement includes an option for Juventus to make the transfer permanent for around €10 million, giving the Italian club the opportunity to assess Vicario’s performances before deciding whether to commit to a permanent deal.
The move brings Vicario back to Italian football after three seasons in the Premier League with Tottenham. The 29 year old goalkeeper joined Spurs from Empoli in 2023 and quickly established himself as an important member of the Tottenham squad.
During his time in North London, Vicario made 117 appearances and recorded 29 clean sheets. He was also part of the Tottenham side that won the Europa League in 2025, ending the club’s long wait for a major trophy.
His departure from Tottenham, however, follows a significant change in his situation at the club.
Vicario lost his position as Tottenham’s first choice goalkeeper following the arrival and emergence of Antonín Kinský, while manager Roberto De Zerbi reportedly decided that the Italian was no longer central to his plans. Spurs had also brought in Martin Dúbravka as additional goalkeeping cover.
That situation opened the door for Juventus, who had been searching for a new goalkeeper throughout the summer transfer window.
The Turin club initially explored a move for Aston Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, but negotiations failed to produce an agreement. Juventus subsequently turned their attention towards Vicario and eventually reached an arrangement with Tottenham.
For Juventus, the signing represents an opportunity to bring an established goalkeeper back to Serie A without immediately committing to a permanent transfer.
Vicario already understands Italian football extremely well. Before moving to Tottenham, he built his reputation through spells with several Italian clubs, including Udinese, Venezia, Perugia, Cagliari and Empoli.
His breakthrough came during his time at Empoli, where his performances attracted Tottenham’s attention and eventually earned him a move to the Premier League.
Vicario also earned recognition at international level. He received his first senior Italy call up in March 2024 and has since made five appearances for the Azzurri.
His return to Serie A could therefore provide an important opportunity to revive his career and potentially strengthen his position within the Italian national team setup.
Juventus will hope that the goalkeeper can bring stability, experience and composure to their defensive unit. Vicario is known for his shot stopping ability and confidence when dealing with pressure inside the penalty area, qualities that could prove valuable during a demanding Serie A campaign.
The move also gives Juventus flexibility.
Rather than making an immediate permanent investment, the loan arrangement allows the club to evaluate Vicario in competitive conditions before deciding whether to activate the purchase option. Reports indicate that the option is worth approximately €10 million, although some reports have provided slightly different figures for the structure of the agreement.
For Tottenham, meanwhile, the transfer represents another step in the reshaping of their squad under De Zerbi.
Vicario leaves after three years in which he became a recognisable figure at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. His time at the club included the memorable Europa League triumph, but his position became increasingly uncertain after Kinský emerged as the preferred option.
The goalkeeper’s departure is also part of a busy summer at Tottenham. Spurs have already invested heavily in strengthening their squad while allowing several players to leave as De Zerbi attempts to build a team capable of competing at the highest level.
For Vicario, however, the move is about starting a new chapter.
Returning to Italy means he will once again compete in a league he knows intimately. More importantly, Juventus provides him with the opportunity to play for one of the country’s biggest clubs and compete for major domestic honours.
The goalkeeper now faces the challenge of proving that he can rediscover his best form and convince Juventus that he deserves a permanent contract.
After making his name in Italy, establishing himself in England and winning European silverware with Tottenham, Vicario’s career has already taken several significant turns.
His next chapter will now unfold in Turin.
