Gumi Says No Govt Can Completely Eliminate Terrorism

Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has urged Nigerians to remain calm despite rising insecurity, insisting that no government anywhere in the world can fully eradicate terrorism.

Gumi made the remarks in response to public anxiety following recent abductions in Kwara State and other parts of the country.

He argued that citizens should temper their expectations, noting that even developed nations still face persistent security threats.

“No government can completely eliminate terrorism. Even countries like the United States still contend with their own security challenges,” Gumi said.

Amid growing frustration over recurring kidnappings, attacks, and bandit operations, the cleric maintained that the security situation was showing signs of gradual improvement.

He advised Nigerians to acknowledge the progress made so far rather than dwell solely on setbacks.
“Things are improving,” he said. “Nigerians should be patient and avoid panic.”

Gumi also alleged that some foreign actors were attempting to exploit religion to widen divisions among Nigerians.

According to him, external forces were “using Christianity” to fuel mistrust and weaken the country’s cohesion.
“Some foreigners are trying to use Christianity to create divisions among Nigerians,” he claimed.

“We must not allow this. Nigeria’s religious communities have coexisted peacefully for generations.”

His comments come at a time of heightened criticism of the government’s approach to tackling terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, as many citizens express frustration over the frequency of attacks and the perceived slow pace of reform.

The fresh wave of abductions and raids has rekindled national debates on accountability, the effectiveness of counter-terrorism operations, and the long-term strategy needed to restore security across the country.
