Residents of Ode Oriya, a quiet agrarian community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, have been left in shock and fear following the abduction of their traditional ruler, Chief Adeniyi Adelana, the Baale of the community, by suspected gunmen.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, has once again drawn attention to the persistent security challenges facing several rural communities across Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom and attacks by armed criminals continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed the community under the cover of darkness and headed directly to the residence of the 60-year-old traditional leader. Residents said the operation appeared carefully planned, with the armed men moving swiftly and confidently before whisking their victim away into a nearby forest.

Sources within the community disclosed that the assailants arrived at the Baale’s residence at about 8 p.m. and immediately began their operation. The attackers reportedly forced their way into the compound and overpowered anyone who attempted to challenge them.

During the attack, the wife of the traditional ruler was reportedly injured after she tried to resist the kidnappers and prevent them from taking her husband away. Community members said she sustained a gunshot wound to one of her hands during the struggle.

The injured woman was later rescued and rushed to a nearby medical facility where she is currently receiving treatment. Family members and local residents expressed gratitude that her condition is said to be stable despite the traumatic experience.

The abduction has plunged the entire community into anxiety, with many residents describing Chief Adelana as a respected leader who has dedicated years to promoting peace, development and unity within the area.

Several residents who spoke about the incident described the traditional ruler as a father figure whose leadership has helped maintain harmony among farmers, traders and other members of the community.

Many community members said they were devastated by the incident and worried about the safety of the monarch, especially considering his age and the difficult conditions often associated with captivity in remote forest locations.

The attack has also reignited conversations about the growing insecurity affecting parts of Ondo State and other regions of the country. Rural communities, in particular, have become increasingly vulnerable to criminal activities due to their distance from major urban centres and limited security presence.

Residents lamented that criminal gangs have continued to exploit forests and isolated areas as hideouts, making it difficult for security agencies to effectively monitor their movements.

In response to the incident, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed that it had commenced an intensive search and rescue operation aimed at securing the release of the abducted traditional ruler.

Police authorities disclosed that officers attached to the Owo Division were immediately mobilised after receiving reports of the attack. Additional security personnel were also deployed to strengthen ongoing efforts and ensure that the perpetrators are tracked down.

According to security sources, operatives have begun combing forests and surrounding communities while intelligence gathering activities have been intensified to uncover the identities and locations of those behind the abduction.

The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Felix Ohagwu, reportedly directed all relevant units within the command to prioritise the rescue mission and ensure that every available resource is deployed toward securing the victim’s freedom.

Law enforcement officials have assured residents that efforts are ongoing and that security agencies remain committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Community leaders and stakeholders have also called for stronger collaboration between security agencies and local residents. They believe intelligence sharing and improved community policing initiatives could help prevent future attacks.

The latest kidnapping has sparked concern among traditional institutions across the state, as attacks targeting monarchs and community leaders have become increasingly worrying in recent years.

Traditional rulers occupy important positions within Nigerian society, serving as custodians of culture, mediators in disputes and key partners in community development efforts. Any threat against them often generates widespread concern because of the influence they wield within their communities.

Security analysts argue that incidents like the abduction of Chief Adelana highlight the urgent need for enhanced surveillance, improved intelligence gathering and greater investment in rural security infrastructure.

Many residents of Ode Oriya have appealed directly to both state and federal authorities to take decisive action against criminal groups operating within forests and remote communities. They insist that sustainable solutions must be implemented to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among rural populations.

For now, the atmosphere in the community remains tense as families, friends and well-wishers await positive news regarding the whereabouts of the traditional ruler.

Prayers continue to pour in from residents, neighbouring communities and traditional institutions who hope that Chief Adeniyi Adelana will be rescued unharmed and reunited with his family in the coming days.

As security operatives intensify their search efforts, many Nigerians will be closely monitoring developments surrounding the case, which has become another stark reminder of the security challenges confronting communities across the country and the urgent need for lasting solutions.

The people of Ode Oriya remain hopeful that their respected leader will return safely, while authorities face increasing pressure to ensure that those responsible for the crime are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
