Gunmen abduct seminarian from Otukpo Catholic Bishop’s residence

Gunmen have abducted a seminarian, Mr. Kelvin Ochai, during an attack on the residence of the Catholic Bishop of Otukpo Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Apochi, in Otukpo, Benue State.

The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo confirmed that the incident occurred late on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Bishop’s Residence in Asa III, Otukpo.

In a statement issued by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, the Diocese appealed to Christians and people of goodwill to pray for the seminarian’s safe return.

According to the statement, Bishop Apochi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and urged members of the Diocese to remain steadfast in prayer for the victim.

“The Catholic Bishop of Otukpo Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Apochi, expresses deep sadness over the incident and calls on all Christ’s faithful within the Diocese and people of goodwill to offer earnest prayers for the seminarian’s quick and safe release,” the statement read.

The Bishop also assured the faithful that efforts were being intensified to secure Ochai’s freedom.

The Diocese further remembered other victims of kidnapping across Nigeria, committing them to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and praying for their speedy and safe release.

Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command has confirmed the abduction.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondona, said investigations had commenced to rescue the seminarian and apprehend those behind the attack.
