Gunmen have abducted two visually impaired persons in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, demanding a ransom of N50 million for their release.
The victims, a man and a woman, were among nine people travelling from Jos to Benue State to attend a training programme before the event was reportedly postponed.
Seven other passengers escaped when the vehicle came under attack on Monday night.
The Plateau State chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Shindol Aaron, confirmed the incident, saying the abduction occurred around 8pm in Riyom LGA.
According to Aaron, the group had travelled from Jos for the training but received information that the programme had been postponed.
He said they were returning to Jos when they encountered the gunmen, who took two passengers away.
“Seven of them escaped, and two were abducted. So, right now, we have a male and a lady in their custody,” he said.
Aaron added that the abductors had contacted someone over the release of the victims, although he had not spoken directly with them.
He said the association had reported the incident to security agencies and was making efforts to secure the victims’ release.
The driver of the vehicle also reportedly went to a police station to report the attack.
Another member of the association, Ishaya Ayuba Danjatau, confirmed the abduction and disclosed that the kidnappers were demanding N50 million.
“The kidnappers have reached out, and they are demanding N50 million before they can free the two persons in their custody,” he said.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
