Gunmen attacked a 50-year-old bike rider in Ibadan, Oyo State capital in an attempt to snatch his motorcycle.

On Wednesday morning, gunmen launched a brazen attack on vehicles and passengers along the Ezinnachi–Okigwe stretch of the expressway.

During the attack, they abducted multiple passengers and reportedly shot several others, causing chaos among stranded travelers.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene filled with terror, noting that panic spread rapidly after the ambush occurred.

Moreover, one passenger recounted that their driver suddenly U-turned upon seeing the attack, narrowly escaping danger.

They explained that, on divine grace, they managed to flee as perpetrators fired near Ezinnachi, close to Okigwe.

The eyewitness also mentioned that, during the attack, some passengers were shot and vehicles parked nearby, victims unknown.

Finally, they stated that in response, all vehicles promptly turned back, heading toward either Okigwe or Umuahia for safety.

Currently, the exact number of casualties and abducted passengers remains uncertain, raising urgent concerns about regional security.

In recent months, violent incidents along that road have increased significantly, which directly impacts travelers’ safety and security.

Additionally, authorities dismantled two security checkpoints between Ezinnachi and Okigwe, exposing much of the highway to criminal threats.

In contrast, a new checkpoint was established after Okigwe Roundabout, but it remains insufficient to fill existing security gaps.

As of now, officials have not confirmed whether security forces have responded or initiated rescue efforts to free abducted passengers.

Ultimately, this incident highlights worsening highway safety issues, emphasizing the urgent need for stronger security measures along southeastern Nigeria’s roads.

Currently, authorities have not released an official statement regarding the situation. Additionally, they have not provided details about ongoing investigations into the attack.

Consequently, travelers should exercise caution. Moreover, they are advised to avoid the affected stretch of road until further notice.
