At least 33 people have been killed following an attack by suspected gunmen on Bui District in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, according to the police.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident in a statement issued Friday in Birnin Kebbi.

Police spokesperson Bashir Usman said the assault occurred on Wednesday when heavily armed men, believed to be Lakurawa militants, stormed the district, allegedly in an attempt to rustle cattle.

Preliminary findings indicate the attackers may have entered the area through Sokoto State, specifically from Gudu Local Government Area.

Residents from Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal and Dan Mai Ago reportedly mobilised to resist the invasion.

The confrontation that followed left 33 people dead.

Security forces, working alongside the military and other agencies, have reinforced their presence in the affected communities.

Authorities say additional personnel and operational resources have been deployed, while continuous patrols are ongoing to restore calm and prevent further attacks.

The police described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the families of the victims and the wider Arewa community.

They also warned residents against confronting armed groups, noting the grave risks involved.

Usman urged the public to report suspicious movements to security agencies and disclosed that targeted operations are underway to apprehend those responsible.

The attack adds to growing security concerns in Kebbi and neighbouring states, where armed groups have carried out raids, kidnappings and extortion.

Recently, suspected terrorists reportedly sent a letter to a community in Ngaski Local Government Area demanding ₦100 million before being allowed entry into the town to “preach.”
