Unknown gunmen has killed a Catholic priest from the Nnewi Diocese, Rev. Fr. Tobias Chukwujekwu Okonkwo tragically in Ihiala, Anambra State, on December 26, 2024, Boxing Day.

The sad news was confirmed in a statement signed by Rev. Fr. Raphael Ezeogu, Chancellor of the Nnewi Catholic Diocese, who described Fr. Tobias as a dedicated priest and pharmacist.

Born on August 11, 1984, Fr. Tobias was serving as the Manager of the Schools of Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, at the time of his death.

The diocese regretted the irreparable loss but expressed hope in divine consolation for the faithful. The statement also urged parishioners to offer prayers and Holy Masses for the repose of Fr. Tobias’ soul and to support his grieving family.

This tragic incident follows the recent abduction of Most Reverend Godwin Okpala, a 75-year-old retired Anglican Archbishop, who remains in captivity. The events highlight the rising insecurity affecting religious leaders in the region.

It should be recalled that many Catholic Priests have been killed in recent times in the South East geo-political zone of the country because of agitators for self determination.
