Gunmen kill Kogi APC chairman

Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another occupant of his vehicle.

The incident occurred on Thursday along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.

The attackers were said to have emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on vehicles travelling along the route.

Yunusa was reportedly heading to Lokoja in a blue Toyota Corolla when the gunmen struck.

His body was later discovered inside the vehicle after the criminal elements escaped into the bush.

The other occupant of the car was reportedly forced out of the vehicle and taken away by the attackers.

Police in Kogi State has commenced investigation into the unfortunate incident and launched a search operation for the abducted victim and the perpetrators.

The spokesman of the command, ASP Saliu Afusat, said security operatives had been deployed to the area and were combing the surrounding forest in an effort to rescue the victim and apprehend the attackers.

Yunusa’s remains were subsequently evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted as part of efforts to determine the circumstances of his death.

The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, has ordered intensified and sustained security operations along the affected route, while directing personnel to pursue those responsible for the attack.

The police also urged residents and motorists plying the Itobe-Ochadamu corridor to remain alert and report suspicious activities or movements to security agencies.
