A tragic incident unfolded in Delta State early Monday morning as Inspector O. O. Ojonogba, a police officer attached to the Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Council, was brutally killed by unidentified assailants in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area.
Inspector Ojonogba, popularly known as “Ade,” served as the council chairman’s orderly and was left behind to care for the chairman’s children while the boss was away in Asaba on official duties.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the attackers struck between 3–4 a.m., gaining access to the compound by breaking through the generator powerhouse while it was running.
The assailants reportedly found Inspector Ojonogba asleep in his lounge and shot him in the neck, killing him instantly.
“Immediately after gaining entrance, they went to the room where the officer was sleeping and shot him”, the witness said.
Following the shooting, the armed men forced their way into the main house, destroying a burglary protector and entering through the dining section.
They proceeded to the children’s room, where they confronted the chairman’s wife. They demanded money and jewelry, firing shots into the ceiling and walls to intimidate her.
The robbers made away with the children’s phones, two iPads, and a laptop. However, after searching for additional valuables and finding none, they fled the scene, leaving residents in shock and grief.
The horrific attack has left the community reeling, with many questioning the growing insecurity in the area.
The Special Assistant on Security to the Chairman, Mr. Obasanjo Zokumor, confirmed the incident to journalists, while Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, assured that the Command is actively pursuing the criminals responsible for the heinous act.
Residents are now calling for increased security measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.
