Gunshot Kills Man Inside Church

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the shocking death of 45-year-old Mr. Udeme Sunday Uko.
He was found with a fatal gunshot wound while sleeping with his family inside a church building in Ukanafun Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John released the statement on Tuesday night in Uyo. She confirmed that the incident occurred at about 12:10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
Mr. Uko, along with his wife and children, had gone to sleep inside a church located in Ikot Oku Usung village.
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out from inside the church. Moments later, Mr. Uko was found lying in a pool of blood.
He had been shot in the head. The preliminary report did not rule out either suicide or a targeted attack.
However, the investigation is ongoing and aims to uncover the full truth.
Concerned villagers, who first heard the gunshot, were alerted by Mr. Uko’s wife. She had immediately raised the alarm after finding her husband dead beside her.
Following the report, police officers rushed to the scene. During the inspection, they recovered a locally made pistol.
The weapon has been taken in as evidence. The man’s body was also moved to the mortuary, where it is being preserved for autopsy.
In the statement, the police emphasized their commitment to finding answers.
“We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned,” DSP John stated. “All available resources are being deployed to ensure justice for the victim.”
She further noted that updates on the investigation will be released as soon as possible.
Authorities are currently questioning potential witnesses and gathering forensic evidence from the scene.
The tragic incident has thrown the local community into shock.
Residents are calling for swift justice and tighter security, especially around sacred places like churches.
Mr. Uko’s death adds to the rising concerns about violent crimes in rural communities across Nigeria.
Police are urging anyone with useful information to come forward immediately.
The Akwa Ibom church shooting remains under active investigation.
