The colourful inauguration marks a major step in COPDEM’s grassroots mobilisation strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
COPDEM leaders emphasised that the newly sworn-in executives would serve as the movement’s engine room in all 21 LGAs and 326 wards of Anambra, ensuring that its message of democracy protection, accountability, and citizens’ empowerment reaches every community.
The hall was decorated with COPDEM’s banners and colours, while enthusiastic members chanted solidarity songs, waved placards, and cheered their leaders.
The ceremony was streamed live on YouTube to enable supporters across Nigeria and abroad to participate virtually.
The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy has, in recent months, intensified its political presence in the South-East, positioning itself as a formidable force in shaping political discourse.
Founded in response to growing concerns over electoral malpractice, governance lapses, and shrinking civic space, COPDEM has organised rallies, public debates, and advocacy campaigns aimed at promoting transparency and defending Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Its activities have attracted the attention of both political observers and the general public, particularly in Anambra, where civic activism has deep historical roots.
During Sunday’s inauguration, COPDEM leaders urged the new executives to be diligent, patriotic, and fearless in carrying out their responsibilities.
Speakers called for vigilance ahead of 2027, warning against voter apathy and political intimidation.
They also encouraged active engagement with local communities to educate citizens on their voting rights, government accountability, and the importance of democratic participation.
Observers noted that COPDEM’s latest move mirrors the strategies of Nigeria’s dominant political parties, which also rely heavily on ward and LGA structures to mobilise voters.
However, unlike traditional political structures, COPDEM claims to operate as a movement of the people, open to members across party lines who share its vision for a more transparent, just, and inclusive Nigeria.
The Nnewi mass rally following the inauguration saw speeches, cultural performances, and a public pledge by the new executives to uphold the values of democracy and resist any attempt to undermine the electoral process.
Political analysts say the turnout at the event signals that COPDEM could emerge as a major influence in Anambra’s political landscape, particularly in a state known for its strong civil society engagement.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the group’s ability to translate its activism into electoral impact will be closely watched by both allies and opponents.
For now, COPDEM’s leaders and supporters in Anambra appear energised and united, declaring Sunday’s inauguration not just as an organisational milestone, but as the beginning of a new chapter in their quest to protect Nigeria’s democracy from all threats.
