A woman confronting the Rivers State Commissioner of Police during ongoing protests over the death of 22-year-old Anthony Obodo has demanded answers from the police over the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
In a video circulating online, the woman challenged the police authorities to bring out the officers involved and explain why Obodo was shot in broad daylight.
Her remarks came as family members, friends and other protesters continued to demand justice for the University of Port Harcourt graduate, whose death has triggered public outrage in Port Harcourt.
Obodo was fatally shot on August 27, 2026, around the Agip-Ada George axis of Port Harcourt. Reports from eyewitnesses and protesters allege that police officers attempted to stop the young man while he was driving before pursuing him and opening fire.
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the shooting and identified Corporal Alfred Louis as the officer allegedly involved. The command said Louis and other members of his team were detained and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department while investigations continue.
The police version of events differs in important respects from the account being advanced by protesters and the victim’s family.
According to the police, a disagreement between Obodo and the officers escalated into a physical confrontation, during which a firearm was discharged. The command said two other passers-by were also injured during the incident.
Protesters, however, have continued to describe Obodo as an unarmed civilian who was unlawfully shot and are demanding that the officers responsible be publicly identified and held accountable.
The Nigerian Bar Association has also become involved in the matter. A delegation visited the Rivers State Police Command to seek clarification, call for a thorough investigation and demand accountability if wrongdoing is established. The NBA said the officers directly involved were brought before its delegation and that the police assured them an Orderly Room Trial would commence.
During Tuesday’s protest, the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, appealed for calm and assured the demonstrators that the officers involved had been detained. He also said the police would not shield anyone found responsible for the killing.
The protests have continued as the family and supporters seek answers over how a dispute involving a young graduate ended with his death.
For the protesters, the central question remains why lethal force was used against Obodo. For the police, the ongoing investigation is expected to establish exactly how the confrontation unfolded and determine whether the officers involved acted within the law.
As investigations continue, the family and protesters are calling for a transparent process and justice for Anthony Obodo.
