BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Peoples Democratic Party, and other political figures have expressed profound grief over the death of Chief Daniel Orbih, a former Chairman of the Ambrose Alli University Governing Council and a prominent political leader in the state .
Chief Orbih passed away on Tuesday, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to the development of Edo State . A long-time member of the PDP and a key figure in the state’s political landscape, he served in various capacities, including as former Edo South Vice Chairman of the PDP and member of the party’s Board of Trustees .
Governor Okpebholo paid tribute to Orbih’s contributions to the development of the state and nation, extending his condolences to his family, friends, and political associates . In a statement, the governor described Orbih as “a dedicated public servant and a man of integrity whose contributions to the development of our dear state will not be forgotten,” and prayed that God would grant his soul eternal rest and comfort the family he left behind .
The Edo State PDP also mourned his passing, describing him as a “dedicated party man and a true leader who served his party and the people with unwavering commitment.” A statement by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Osaigbovo Iyoha, noted that Orbih “was a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration to many, and his contributions to the growth and development of our party and the state cannot be overstated” .
The PDP family in Edo South Senatorial District also expressed shock and sorrow at his passing, with party leaders describing Orbih as “an astute politician and a bridge builder who worked tirelessly for the progress of the party and the people of Edo South.” His colleagues on the AAU Governing Council, where he served as Chairman, also paid tribute, describing him as a “progressive leader whose contributions to the growth and development of the institution were immense and will be remembered for generations to come.”
Orbih’s death also drew reactions from other political figures in the state, with many describing him as a “father figure” and a “source of strength for the party.” His political associates noted his role in mediating disputes and strengthening the party’s base in Edo South.
His funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family. As Edo State mourns the loss of one of its most experienced political leaders, the outpouring of tributes reflects the deep respect he commanded across party lines .
