A Nigerian woman, Chioma Oniniwu, has withdrawn her 2025 rape allegation against Singapore-based Nigerian footballer Victor Ebele Junior and publicly apologised to him, his brother and their family.
Oniniwu made the latest disclosure after returning to social media following her arrest, court appearance and subsequent release on bail. In her statement, she acknowledged that the allegation against Ebele was wrong and said fear and emotional distress had influenced her actions.
The controversy dates back to 2025, when Oniniwu publicly accused Ebele of rape on X. At the time, she also made claims involving members of his family, including his mother and sister, and accused his professional footballer brother, Frank Ebele, of protecting him.
She also alleged that she had been poorly treated by police officers when she attempted to report the matter.
However, following her arrest on August 26, 2026, and subsequent legal proceedings, Oniniwu changed her position.
In a statement shared online, she said she had been going through a difficult period and was extremely frightened when she made the accusation. She accepted responsibility for wrongly accusing Victor and acknowledged the effect her statements had on him and his family.
Oniniwu also issued a separate apology addressed to Victor Ebele, Frank Ebele and the wider Ebele family.
She explained that she had been pregnant at the time and was overwhelmed by fear about facing the situation alone. She acknowledged that her personal circumstances did not justify what she had done and expressed regret over the consequences of the accusation.
She further apologised to the Nigerian Police Force, saying she regretted the disruption and burden her actions may have caused.
The latest development represents a dramatic reversal in a controversy that had attracted considerable attention on social media.
Reports indicate that Oniniwu was arrested, arraigned and remanded in custody before later being granted bail. The exact legal status and outcome of any outstanding proceedings remain matters for the relevant authorities and courts.
