Muktar Betara Aliyu, Chairman of the House Committee on FCT, has clarified his role in converting Nigerian Army University Biu.

The lawmaker addressed public concerns through his official X account on May 30, 2025, providing details about the legislative process.

He explained that his sponsored bill only sought to formalize the university’s transition legally.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had already approved the conversion following Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum’s request.

The governor’s appeal came as military operations in the region gradually reduced.

Hon. Betara emphasized that legislative backing was necessary to repeal NAUB’s military status officially. “My bill simply provides legal support for the conversion,” he stated, assuring constituents of due process. Attached documents further clarified the steps taken to ensure transparency.

The conversion aims to expand the university’s academic offerings and improve accessibility. This change is expected to boost education and socio-economic growth in Southern Borno. Stakeholders anticipate broader opportunities for students and communities under the new structure.

Local leaders have welcomed the move, citing its potential to enhance regional development. Students and faculty also expressed optimism about the institution’s future direction. The transition marks a significant shift in the university’s role within Nigeria’s education sector.

Hon. Betara reiterated his commitment to serving his constituency’s interests throughout the process. He encouraged continued dialogue to address any remaining concerns. The conversion reflects broader efforts to adapt institutions to evolving regional needs.

As discussions continue, stakeholders remain focused on preserving the institution’s academic standards. The conversion process highlights the importance of legislative oversight in institutional reforms. Hon. Betara’s clarification aims to foster understanding and support for the transition.

The university’s evolution reflects changing security and educational priorities in the region. Officials remain committed to ensuring a seamless shift for students and staff. The broader impact of this change will unfold in the coming years.

Educational analysts predict positive outcomes for both the institution and its host community. The conversion underscores the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s higher education policies. Final implementation steps are now underway to complete the transition process.
