House of Reps orders reversal of recent electricity tariff hike

Published

on

The House of Representatives on Tuesday asked the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the distribution companies, DISCOs, to reverse the tariff hike for Band A customers immediately.

This resolution was reached after the adoption of a report presented by the House Committee on Power which recommended reverting to the previous tariff due to the financial strain the new rate imposes on Nigerians.

NERC had announced a tariff hike, raising the cost for Band A customers to N225 per kilowatt. However, the House has resolved to investigate this increase further.

While presenting the report, Victor Nwokolo, Chairman of the Committee on Power, stressed that the new tariff is unaffordable for many Nigerians.

The Committee’s recommendations were adopted by the Committee of the Whole and subsequently passed.
