How A Falling Container Crushed Man, His 2 Sons, & 2 Others In Lagos
Residents and commuters of Ojota were given a rude shock early hours of Saturday when a full-laden container fell from a truck on a commercial bus at Ojota Bus Stop, Lagos, killing five persons on the spot.
Elombah.com gathered that among the victims are the bus driver and his two children who were coming from a church programme at the Redeemed Christian Church of God camp, at Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency [LASEMA] said that its “ERT received a distressed call via the CRM regarding an accident at Ojota Bus stop on the 8th July, 2017, at about 4:02am”
The call prompted the immediate activation of the Agency’s ERT to the scene of the incident.
According the General Manager LASEMA Mr Adesina Tiamiyu “investigation carried out by the ERT at the scene revealed that an articulated truck with registration number AKD 663 KF conveyed two 40ft containers laden with plywood fell on Volkswagen commercial bus (Danfo) with registration number FST 944 XR which the passengers were trapped.”
Mr Tiamiyu said “the prompt intervention by the LASEMA Response Unit led to the rescue of three victims and were taken to the Trauma Centre Toll Gate.”
Meanwhile, “5 dead bodies trapped in the bus were extricated by the LASEMA Team and were taken to Ikorodu General Hospital Mortuary.”
The Agency’s ERT and LRU fire service was led by the General Manager LASEMA Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, other Agencies on ground includes, Nigeria Police Force led by the Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni , Commander RRS Tunji Disu, LASTMA, LASAMBUS and Lagos State Fire Service, FRSC and NSCDC.
The General Manager LASEMA however advised articulated truck drivers and owners to always exercise caution, avoid over loading and also ensure that their vehicles are road worthy.
The deceased bus driver’s name was given as Charles by Informationng, which confirmed the death of a woman and one middle-aged man in the accident, while three others were injured.
It also added that when Charles wanted to leave the camp for his Gbagada home on Saturday with his sons and two neighbours, three other worshippers begged him for a lift.
As Charles parked at the bus stop around 3am for the two passengers to alight from the vehicle, the container loaded with plywood suddenly fell off the truck onto the bus, and trapped all the occupants.
The reported said the truck driver fled the scene, but his motor boy was apprehended and handed over to the police.
However, one of the church members given a lift by Charles, simply identified as Ifeanyi, who was injured in the leg, walked out supported by his sister and spoke to Informationng.
He said, “He had stopped at Ojota for them (two other members of the RCCG) to alight from the bus when I suddenly heard the sound of something crashing on the bus. That was all I knew.”
