The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio has opened up how a Senator from the Labour Party secretly approached him, seeking help to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He made the revelation while speaking at the APC National Summit in Abuja on Thursday, May 22.
Akpabio said the move is part of a growing wave of defections shaking opposition parties, as many politicians look to align with President Bola Tinubu’s political agenda.
Senator Akpabio who did not reveal the name of the lawmaker, said the senator personally pleaded with him for help in crossing over to the APC, a sign he said demonstrates the widespread attraction to the ruling party.
“The truth is, many are eager to join the winning team. One Labour Party senator begged me quietly to help him join APC,” Akpabio stated, adding that such requests have become increasingly common in recent months.
He announced that more people are interested in joining the Tinubu train.
He said: “The number of states that are coming to join you (Tinubu) is increasing. As I was leaving, one senator was dragging my dress today. He said, ‘Please take me there.”
According to Akpabio, he explained to the Labour Party lawmaker that he cannot join Tinubu at the moment.
He, however, did not say when it would be possible for the unnamed lawmaker to join the APC.
“I said, ‘You can’t come now,’ and he is an LP senator. I don’t want to mention his name, he is in my car outside,” Akpabio said.
