Citizens of Anambra State were jolted when the Minority Leader of Anambra House of Assembly, Hon. Onyebuchi Offor revealed that the state governor, Willie Obiano has been guzzling N1.2 billion in the name of security votes monthly.
Hon. Onyebuchi Offor made the revelation in a live radio programme on Blaze 91.5 fm Radio over the weekend.
Hon. Offor is the legislator representing Ekwusigo State Constituency at the State Assembly.
He further revealed that the wife of the governor, Mrs. Ebele Obiano has also illegally been drawing N250 million per month.
Consequent upon this revelation, the opposition All Progressives Congress [APC] has issued a statement demanding that Obiano’s wife should refund the money.
Most repulsive is the fact that, according to Hon. Offor, these actions were approved by Anambra State House of Assembly.
Little wonder that the Anambra State chapter of the APC is also asking for the head of the Speaker of the House, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu.
According to an APC statement signed by APC State Publicity Secretary, Okelo Madukaife, Hon Maduagwu, having lived with these allegations, with the attending angry responses of Anambra citizens without a word has confirmed them with her silence.
Anambra citizens are in no slightest doubt of the revelation as the whistle blower, the Minority Leader should know, having come from the only institution authorized by law to appropriate funds in the state.
APC thereby called on the Speaker of the legislature to resign from her position as Speaker.
That will enable a new speaker to lead the process of the reversal of those decisions and the full recovery of all the monies so far collected by Mrs. Obiano, who has no mandate from Anambrarians.
APC said in the statement: “We have always had reason to believe that a private citizen whose only structural connection to governance is that she is married to a high official in governance cannot donate houses claimed to have been built at the cost of N41m[illion] each, even when they suggest an action value of N4.5m.
“We have always worried that the fast-paced construction and engagement in new mega-cash businesses at the instance of Mrs. Obiano can only point its putrid fingers in a direction which fear has now been confirmed.”
APC therefore called for a broad audit of all projects being executed by Mrs. Obiano.
They also sought for a downward review of these humongous security votes.
Suggest N300 million, APC called for the immediate reduction of that sum ‘sum of madness’ to the level commensurate with the state economic strength.
Recently, the Nigeria Labour Congress [NLC] had called for a total scrapping of the so-called security votes saying its a wastage vested on politicians.
