A resident of Anambra State, one Mr. Ogbuefi Onyeka Vitalis Urams, has cried out over how police officers extorted N150,000 from him at gun point on September 18, 2022, along Enugu Onitsha Express Road, after Nkwelle junction.

Mr. Ogbuefi took to his social media handle to narrate his ordeal at the hands of the hoodlums in uniform.

Ogbuefi narrated: “This is to notify Soludo [Governor of Anambra State] that police, who are meant to protect Anambra citizens and residents are now extorting them at gun points.

“I was extorted 150k naira on Sunday 18th September 2022, along Enugu Onitsha express road after Nkwelle junction. I was held hostage for 3 hours for refusing to comply with their illegal instructions.

“At a point they believe I’m not ready to do so, they started threatening to kill me and label me unknown gun men which scared me and made me to withdraw 70,000 plus 80k in my pocket making it 150k they extorted from me.

“I succumbed to their threat because I was taken to lonely area inside Ogidi after I refused to give them money along the express road.

“These policemen were St squad.”

Reacting to the story, a News Band correspondent wondered how policemen, who are meant to be custodians of the law  would become violators of same.

He observed: “Residents are being intimidated by the police because some people encourage criminality. Who made the police the priest and judge over us?

“Now, assuming the police found something incriminating on him, does that qualify the police as the prosecutor, judge, and executor against a Nigerian assumed innocent until proven otherwise?

“Who gave the police the impetus to harass and intimidate citizens? Since when does the custodian of the law become a violator of same?” Read more.
