“I chose principle over power” , Segun Showunmi breaks silence on politics, privilege, Tinubu
DDM News

Segun Showunmi has spoken boldly about his stance on politics, privilege, and power in Nigeria.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain revealed that he has rejected several top political appointments under President Tinubu’s government, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathers.
He emphasized that his refusal is not due to a lack of access but a matter of personal principle.
Showunmi said he could have easily gotten appointments through his connections but chose not to pursue them.
“I was born with the womb of a woman that had money,” he stated during the interview.
“My father gave his mates money even while in the army,” he continued with a calm and firm expression.
“Please, I don’t know that kind of poverty, but I’m just humble,” he added, sounding neither boastful nor dismissive.
His statement highlighted his comfort with his background and his decision to stay true to his values.
He stressed that he is not bitter, nor is he someone who was denied access to power.
“If I wanted an appointment from Asiwaju, I’d be there since,” Showunmi said confidently.
“My brother is Ibikunle Amosun,” he disclosed, referencing a key ally of President Tinubu.
“We had issues because I left him for Gbenga Daniel,” he added, showing he made political choices consciously.
“Amosun was governor for eight years; he’s my brother,” he explained, reinforcing how close he was to influence.
Despite that, he insisted he never begged or lobbied for political favors.
“He can never tell you I came to him to beg for a position,” he said with conviction.
“I don’t flow that way,” he added, distancing himself from political desperation and opportunism.
For Showunmi, politics should be about service, not begging for appointments or personal gain.
Addressing his recent visit to the President, he clarified that it was not for selfish reasons.
“I just wanted to understand the direction the leader is heading,” he said about the meeting.
“There comes a time in a nation’s life when clarity becomes necessary,” he added.
“I guarantee you, I don’t kid myself or anyone else,” he stated.
Showunmi even described President Tinubu as “smart, above average,” despite their opposing political views.
On national issues, he spoke directly about fuel subsidy removal and its consequences.
“If the government wants to remove subsidy, there’s no easy way to do it,” he said plainly.
He maintained he had always been honest about the likely outcomes of such a move.
“The knock-on effect of removing subsidies is clear,” he said without mincing words.
However, what he could not accept was the absence of accountability in the process.
“I would have rather seen the President punish those who mismanaged the opportunity,” he said.
Showunmi’s words reflect a rare mix of access, insight, and integrity in Nigeria’s political space.
His message was clear, he could walk into power, but chose the path of principle instead.
