LAGOS, NIGERIA — Nollywood actor Emeka Ike has expressed deep concern over what he described as a breach of his personal security following an alleged data leak involving records linked to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The actor said the incident left him feeling unsafe for the first time, adding that the exposure of sensitive personal information has raised serious concerns about privacy, data protection, and citizen security in Nigeria’s electoral database system.

According to Ike, the alleged leak involved personal details that should ordinarily remain confidential within official government records. He warned that such incidents could expose affected individuals to identity misuse, fraud, and broader security risks if not properly addressed.

He further stated that the situation has pushed him to initiate legal action against those responsible, insisting that accountability must be enforced to prevent a recurrence. Ike emphasized that citizens place trust in government institutions to safeguard their data, and any breach of that trust must be treated with urgency.

The development has sparked renewed public debate over the security of digital records managed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, especially as Nigeria continues to expand its biometric voter registration and electronic data systems.

Privacy advocates and digital rights stakeholders have also raised concerns, noting that data protection frameworks in the country must be strengthened to keep pace with increasing digital vulnerabilities. They argue that electoral institutions, in particular, handle highly sensitive information that requires strict safeguards against unauthorized access or exposure.

Legal experts suggest that if the allegations are substantiated, the case could test the effectiveness of Nigeria’s data protection laws and the accountability mechanisms surrounding public institutions that manage citizens’ personal information.

Meanwhile, supporters of the actor have expressed solidarity, calling for a transparent investigation into the alleged leak and stronger measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Many social media users also echoed concerns about growing cyber risks in public databases.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has not yet issued a detailed public response regarding the specific allegation but has consistently maintained in previous instances that it is working to strengthen the integrity and security of its voter data systems.
