Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha has revealed the unusual story behind the nickname that became synonymous with his illustrious career.
Born Augustine Azuka Okocha, the former Super Eagles captain explained that the name “Jay-Jay” originated in his neighbourhood when he was growing up.
According to Okocha, there were several people named Austin in the area, so he was identified as “Austin Jay-Jay’s brother” to distinguish him from the others.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast hosted by former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel, Okocha jokingly said he still “pays royalties” to his brother for taking the name.
“I still pay royalties to my brother for taking his name,” Okocha said.
The football icon also explained that the nickname became so closely associated with him that “Jay-Jay” eventually became his official passport name because people often struggled to pronounce or remember “Augustine.”
