The NCAA will close Ibadan Airport in March 2024 for six months to conduct critical maintenance work.
By prioritizing infrastructure upgrades, the authority aims to improve safety standards and ensure reliable aviation operations.
This closure follows a structured timeline, addressing urgent repairs while minimizing long-term disruptions. Proactive measures underscore the NCAA’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s air transport efficiency nationwide.
NCAA Director Michael Achimugu recently stated the closure will advance modernization efforts, pending final confirmation.
On a Friday, Achimugu highlighted the urgency of the upgrades through a social media post. Furthermore, he noted that adjustments may follow based on public feedback.
This follows commitments from federal and Oyo State leaders to transform the airport into an international hub.
“On June 27, 2024, Governor Seyi Makinde announced President Tinubu approved constructing a new terminal and extending Oyo State’s runway.
Additionally, these infrastructure upgrades will enhance airport efficiency, fostering regional economic growth and improved connectivity across the state.”
These upgrades aim to enhance air travel efficiency and passenger experience nationwide.
The groundwork for these upgrades has already begun. On January 31, 2024, the Oyo State government initiated the construction of a new terminal building at the airport.
Bimbo Adekanmbi announced the terminal will accommodate one million passengers yearly once operational. Recently, as committee chairman, he emphasized its expanded capacity to boost travel efficiency.
Meanwhile, he confirmed the runway extension, launched in September 2024 under phase one redevelopment, is progressing. This follows his updates aligning upgrades with broader airport modernization goals.
Authorities are extending the runway from 2,400 to 3,000 meters. Currently, crews have completed 30-40% of work and aim to finish by December 2025.
Looking ahead, Adekanmbi confirmed the new terminal will open by early 2026. These upgrades will boost capacity, positioning the airport as a domestic and international hub.
The planned closure and ongoing construction signal a major step forward in the long-term vision for Ibadan Airport.
The NCAA urges travelers and stakeholders to monitor updates for closure-period timelines and alternative arrangements.
Furthermore, staying informed via official announcements allows timely adjustments, reducing disruptions during this period.
Actively follow the NCAA’s guidance to adapt plans swiftly, ensuring minimal impact while navigating the closure efficiently.
