IDPs in Benue protest poor conditions, alleged neglect

Hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State protested in Makurdi on Thursday, demanding better living conditions.

The displaced individuals, now sheltering at the Makurdi International Ultra Modern Market after deadly herder attacks, decried food shortages and government neglect.

Last week’s attacks claimed over 200 lives, leaving survivors traumatized and desperate.

Marching along Abu King Shuluwa Road, the IDPs chanted solidarity songs, pleading for immediate intervention.

They also accused officials of misusing N12 million donated by Senator George Akume and another senator for their welfare.

One protester, Liambe, voiced their frustration: “They brought us here but abandoned us without food. Even Senator Akume’s donation hasn’t reached us. Treat us fairly or send us back home.”

Their outcry highlights the dire conditions in the camp, where basic needs remain unmet.

BSEMA Denies Neglect, Claims Protest Was Sponsored

However, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) dismissed the allegations, calling the protest staged.

Dr. Donald Komgbenda, BSEMA’s Administrative Officer, insisted aid distribution was ongoing but required proper profiling.

“This was a sponsored protest,”* he said.

“We started with 190 IDPs, but numbers surged to 3,500. We provide daily meals and are now distributing raw food after verification.”

Despite BSEMA’s assurances, IDPs insist aid is insufficient and delayed.

The disagreement underscores growing tensions between displaced communities and authorities tasked with their welfare.

Political Leaders Condemn Government’s Response

The crisis has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures.

Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate, slammed President Tinubu and Governor Hyacinth Alia for their “insensitive” handling of the tragedy.

He condemned Tinubu’s condolence visit as a “political show” rather than genuine support.

Atiku Abubakar’s media aide, Paul Ibe, characterized the recent visit as “theatrical.”

He criticized the decision to have children welcome Tinubu in the rain, suggesting that it appeared unnecessary and staged.

Consequently, Ibe emphasized the overly performative nature of the event, implying a lack of genuine sincerity.

Furthermore, Farotimi’s comment emphasized the stark contrast between the tragedy and the political spectacle, highlighting underlying issues of insensitivity.

This exchange underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding the political visit, reflecting broader concerns about public perception and ethical considerations.

Tinubu’s Committee for Peace and Justice

In response, President Tinubu directed SGF Akume to lead a committee including former governors, traditional rulers, and stakeholders to address the crisis.

Senator Abdul-Aziz Yari expressed confidence in Tinubu’s resolve, stating, “The president will ensure justice.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) urged swift action against the attackers.

Executive Secretary Femi Sheidu stressed, “Violence must never be normalized. We need responsive policing to protect vulnerable communities.

A Plea for Dignity and Solutions

As IDPs await aid, they plead for either sufficient support or safe return to their homes.

The crisis exposes Nigeria’s broader displacement challenges, with transparency concerns lingering.

The tragedy has reignited debates on compassionate leadership during crises. Stakeholders urge prioritizing victims over political optics.

Moving forward, justice for the bereaved and tackling violence’s root causes remain critical for lasting peace in Benue.
