Dr. Ngozi Charisa Ogbogbo becomes the first female professor in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Ghana.

The University of Ghana has announced the historic promotion of Dr. Charisa Peace Ngozi Ogbogbo to the rank of Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics, making her the first woman to attain professorship in the Mathematical Sciences since the University’s establishment in 1948.

Who is Dr Charisa Ngozi Ogbogbo?

Dr. Charisa Ngozi Ogbogbo is a Nigerian mathematician who has made history as the first woman to attain professorship in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Ghana.

She was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics on May 29, 2025.

Education
Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Abia State University in Nigeria

Master’s degrees in both Economics and Mathematics from the University of Ibadan

Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Ibadan

Career

Currently serves as the Head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Ghana

Joined the faculty of the department in January 2010

Contributed to the department in various capacities, including course coordinator, mentor to students, course advisor, and Examination officer

Research Interests
Applied Mathematics, particularly Financial Mathematics and Mathematical Modelling

Published several peer-reviewed papers, including “Solution to Nonlinear Wave and Evolution Equations by Direct Algebraic Method” and “Markov Models on Share Price Movements in Nigeria Stock Market Capitalization

Achievements
Her scholarly work has received widespread recognition, with over 89 citations

Supervised numerous graduate theses and mentored young mathematicians, especially women pursuing careers in STEM
