(DDM) – The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has disbursed over N2.43 billion to the families and next of kin of police officers who died in active service across Nigeria.

The financial support, presented through cheques, was distributed to 1,075 beneficiaries in what authorities describe as a major welfare intervention for fallen personnel.

The compensation package, facilitated under the Nigeria Police Force welfare scheme, is aimed at providing relief to families who lost loved ones while serving the nation.

Police authorities say the initiative reflects a renewed commitment to prioritizing the welfare of officers and their dependents, particularly those affected by the risks associated with law enforcement duties.

Speaking during the presentation, the IGP emphasized that the sacrifices of officers who died in service would never be forgotten. He noted that the police institution has a responsibility not only to protect citizens but also to support the families of personnel who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. According to him, timely compensation is critical to maintaining morale within the force.

The disbursement comes against the backdrop of increasing security challenges across Nigeria, where police officers are frequently deployed to combat crime, insurgency, and communal conflicts. Analysts note that the hazardous nature of policing in the country has led to growing calls for improved welfare packages, insurance schemes, and support systems for officers and their families.

Historically, delays in the payment of benefits to families of fallen officers have been a major concern. In many cases, relatives have struggled for years to access entitlements, leading to criticism of institutional inefficiencies. This latest payment, however, is being viewed as a step toward addressing those longstanding issues and restoring confidence in the system.

Experts explain that welfare reforms within the police force are essential not only for humanitarian reasons but also for operational effectiveness. When officers are assured that their families will be supported in the event of death or injury, it can improve commitment, reduce anxiety, and enhance performance in high-risk assignments.

The Nigeria Police Force has in recent years introduced several initiatives aimed at improving personnel welfare, including insurance schemes and enhanced compensation structures. However, stakeholders argue that sustained implementation and transparency are necessary to ensure that such interventions reach intended beneficiaries without delay.

Families of the deceased officers expressed appreciation for the support, describing it as a crucial lifeline amid difficult circumstances. Some beneficiaries noted that while no amount of money can replace lost loved ones, the financial assistance would help them cope with immediate needs such as education, housing, and healthcare.

The IGP reiterated that the police leadership remains committed to strengthening welfare policies and ensuring that no family of a fallen officer is neglected.

He also called for continued collaboration between the government, security agencies, and stakeholders to improve the overall well-being of personnel serving in the nation’s security sector.
